Undefeated Ladies' Classic champ Zenyatta took on males for the first time and became the first female to win the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.Undefeated defending Ladies' Classic champ Zenyatta took on males for the first time and became the first female to win the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Zenyatta thus kept her undefeated record intact at 14 for 14. Horse of the Year discussion now includes her along with superstar 3-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra, who won the Preakness and went 8 for 8 this year. However, Rachel Alexandra skipped the Breeders' Cup 2009 due to her owner Jess Jackson's dislike of synthetic surfaces.
The Breeders' Cup 2009 results showed Zenyatta paying 7.60 to win, 5.60 to place, and 3.80 to show. She was the first female to win the Classic in the 26-year history of the Breeders' Cup Classic race. |

Curlin
pulled away in the final furlong to win powerfully
Curlin, a 3-year-old
colt who began his career in February, reached the
pinnacle of American racing less than nine months
later with a stylish 4 1/2-length win in the
$4,580,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge
(gr. I) at Monmouth Park Oct. 27 - 2007. |
 |
Curlin,
ridden by Robby Albarado, just missed the track record
for 10 furlongs, getting the distance on a sloppy track
in 2:00.59. The time was less than one tick off the
Monmouth mark set by Carry Back (listed as 2:00.40) in
1962. A gutsy Hard Spun, who took the lead into the
stretch but could not match strides in the lane, hung
tough for second while Awesome Gem came on late for
third over favored Street Sense.
Curlin paid $10.80, $5,20, and $4.20 while Hard Spun
paid $7.60 and $5.80. Awesome Gem, a 28-1 shot, returned
$9.40 for the show. The exacta paid $70.80, while the $1
trifecta paid $645.30. |

Invasor too much for Bernardini
The three leading candidates for Horse of the Year gathered at Churchill Downs on Saturday for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, and at the end of an emotionally draining day that captured the highs and the lows of the sport, Invasor proved that he is the best.
Invasor, who had not raced for three months, unleashed a powerful closing charge down the center of the track, caught favored Bernardini with a sixteenth of a mile to go, and pulled away for a one-length victory in 2:02.18 for 1 1/4 miles on the fast main track. Bernardini finished second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Premium Tap. Giacomo rallied for fourth and was followed, in order, by Brother Derek, George Washington, Lava Man, Perfect Drift, Lawyer Ron, Sun King, Flower Alley, Suave, and David Junior, who was eased. |

Saint Liam came through in the Breeders' Cup Classic and probably wrapped up Horse of the Year honors at Belmont Park with a stirring victory in America's richest race.
Taking the lead at the top of the stretch, Saint Liam held off the challenge of Flower Alley and gave Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey his fifth win in the Classic and 15th victory in the Breeders' Cup.
Sent off as the 2-1 favorite in a field of 13, Saint Liam bided his time behind leaders Sun King and Suave until the field reached the far turn. And that's when Bailey sent the 5-year-old son of Saint Ballado four-wide to take command.

Saint Liam came into the $4,680,000 Classic with three wins in five starts 2005, including the Woodward at Belmont on Sept. 10. With previously unbeatens Lost in the Fog losing in the $1 million Sprint and First Samurai losing in the $1.6 million Juvenile, Saint Liam appears to have the inside track for Horse of the Year. His top competition would be Preakness and Belmont winner Afleet Alex, who has not raced in nearly five months and missed the Classic.
Saint Liam, a hometown favorite who trained for this race at nearby Aqueduct, gave trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., his second win on the day. Earlier, his sprinter Silver Train upset Lost in the Fog.
"We just got lucky,'' Dutrow Jr. said. "I just couldn't be happier.'' |

HORSE RACING GAMBLING TIPS |
-
Bet
only on horses you feel have a good chance of winning.
-
If
you don't like a horse, don't bet on it.
-
Give
preference to winners. Choose a horse that has
won before.
-
Avoid
betting on a horse that has just moved up in class.
-
Look
for value odds as much as likely winners. If you
keep looking for them, you will learn to spot them fairly
quickly.
-
Look
for a horse that has a fair chance of winning and
is not overly backed. This is usually a good value bet
in the long run. On odds of say, 10:1, you need
to win once in ten attempts to break even. Anything more
is net profit. Horses backed heavily by touting
services and computer handicappers may win more often,
but are usually poor value bets.
-
When
the track is slow or heavy, give preference to
fast starters. Slow, muddy and heavy track conditions
usually favor the horse that takes an early lead.
-
A
straight bet is simple, manageable and not too
difficult to win. Play it but always weigh up the odds.
Avoid favorites and long shots (outsiders) too. Be selective
- don't bet on anything or everything.
-
When
betting straight, consider betting to win and show,
or each-way, if the odds are relatively high.
